Frequently Asked Questions – Maternity

Congratulations on your pregnancy! This is such a special time in your life to capture your essence and beauty.  To better prepare for you for your portraits, here are answers to some commonly asked questions.

How far along should I be for my portraits?

Right about seven to eight months pregnant is ideal.  This is probably when you will feel and look your best ... plus, you can still fit into all those cute maternity outfits.  If you wait until the last month of pregnancy, there is more likelihood of water retention, feeling uncomfortable, and of course, the baby arriving early!

What is the best time of day for portraits?

For outdoor portraits, two hours before sunset is the best time. During the "golden hour," the light is diffused and it casts a warm, glowing hue.  Portraits are dramatically enhanced by the sun's natural light.

Indoor portraits are a little more flexible.  All we need is a room with plenty of light.  Whichever choice you feel most comfortable with will result in gorgeous portraits..  you can even have a mix of both indoor and outdoor shots.

Where does the maternity photo-shoot take place?

As an on-location photographer, the best part is that I can come to you!  Sessions can take place in the comfort of your own home or at a favorite spot. The location can be somewhere you really enjoy.. a beautiful local park, your favorite landmark, or an ice cream parlor you often visit.  Thinking of something you like to do can also help in narrowing your selection down.  For example, collecting shells on the beach or enjoying the Boston skyline.  If you can't think of anything, I can offer suggestions.  At the end of the day, the location should represent you!

What should I wear?

  • Solid colored shirts and form-fitting outfits with a little stretch are recommended as they focus attention on your tummy's shape and will compliment your figure. Silk and cotton drape around your the tummy the best.
  • Long sleeve and sleeveless (tank tops/ spaghetti straps) shirts work well.
  • Dark jeans and black tapering yoga pants make your legs look long and slim.
  • Since your hands play an important role, it's a good idea to get a manicure or a light polish.  Same goes for your toes if you plan on wearing sandal-type shoes or going barefoot.
  • Show off your style and add a fun splash of color with accessories (i.e., a cool scarf, a chunky piece of jewelry).  Speaking of accessories, have your ultrasound handy; we can take a special portrait of mama and baby.

Can my spouse & children be part of the session?

Absolutely! These photographs are precious keepsakes that reflect your beautiful growing family... they will be treasured forever.

My sons still look at my maternity portraits and with bright, wide eyes ask "mommy, was that really me in your belly?" When I respond "yes," they always giggle and say "aw, I was so little, I fit in your tummy." I love moments like these with my boys.
